REVITALIZATION IN THE DOWNTOWN TRANSCONA AREA

The revitalization plan for the business district along Regent Ave. between Winona and Kanata has been completed. There were some exciting additions to the original plan and a few changes as well.

The Biz banner poles will be refinished and modified with new solar lights, banners and hanging plants. In the summer there will be an array of colour with the hanging flower baskets and in the winter there will be dazzling holiday lights. There will be flags mounted on new poles in the median with wind-powered lighting. These flags will symbolize Transcona's past and the wind turbines will demonstrate Transcona's commitment to the future through environmental sustainability.

An entrance archway has been proposed that will provide a welcome message announcing the beginning and the end point of Downtown Transcona. New benches and bike racks will also be a part of the new Downtown image. Transcona Biz will be working with the Winnipeg Arts Council to create some artistically-designed bench racks. New street signage will be installed that will differentiate between West and East Regent. Etched plaques will inform the public of important places and events that have taken place and are an integral part of Transcona's history.

The Biz board, McGowan Russell, and Councillor Russ Wyatt have been meeting and working on this plan to bring it to fruition. The next step will be for the Biz to begin applying for grants from many different sources so that the first phase of the project can begin in the spring.
